Skiing in Northwest Montana |
|
|
Big Mountain - Whitefish, Montana
Since 1935, when locals first shouldered their planks and hiked up Big Mountain, pure has meant pristine views, chutes of powder, plenty of elbow room and unmatched skiing.
Today, an efficient lift system with high-speed quads makes the climb, but the purity remains: 3,000 acres of powder stashes, open glades, velvety groomers and surprisingly few people.
Big Mountain Resort also has the region's premier Snowsports Center with lessons for all sports and skill levels. We offer a wild terrain park, groomed Nordic trails and
snowtubing.
Blacktail Mountain - Lakeside, Montana
Blacktail Ski Mountain has over 1000 acres of National Forest with 1440 feet of vertical elevation. The three-story lodge, located at the top of the mountain, offers all the amenities to make your day of skiing most enjoyable. The ticket office, full service rental shop, and Blacktail Trading Co. are all housed on the first floor. Upper Terminal Cafè offers great lunches or bring your own and sit by the warm fireplace on the second floor. Muley's Pub and Restaurant, located on the third level, has a wonderful view, full menu, and great après ski.

In spite of its renowned purity, studies at the Bio Station show that water quality of Flathead Lake has declined over the last decade due to the combined effects of increased pollution from human sources, erosion of the shoreline caused by dam operations and introduction of non-native biota (flora and fauna).
Of the 25 fish species most commonly found in the Flathead River-Lake ecosystem, 10 species are native and 15 have been introduced. The native species include reside shiner, peamouth minnow, squawfish minnow, largescale sucker, longnose sucker, sculpin, bull trout, cutthroat trout, pygmy whitefish and mountain whitefish. Lake trout, lake whitefish and yellow perch are the most common non-natives and have increased in abundance since 1970 whereas native species have declined.
